Matsuzaki Ken

(Japanese b.1950)

Matsuzaki Ken is a Japanese ceramic artist who studied under Living National Treasure Shimaoka Tatsuzo and today lives and works in Mashiko, having exhibited both in Japan and internationally.

Following his graduation from Tokyo Tamagawa Art university in 1972, Matsuzaki Ken moved to Mashiko to study under Shimaoka Tatsuzo for five years before setting up his own workshop. It is possible to see the influence of Shimaoka and of the Mingei movement in Matsuzaki Ken’s works, but his works also have a contemporary feel and he experiments with new directions for traditional techniques. He uses a variety of clays from across Japan and frequently works with Shino and Oribe glazes. Matsuzaki Ken has exhibited in Japan, the US and the UK and his ceramic works are held in the collections of public institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
