Claude Champy

(French b.1944)

Claude Champy is a French ceramicist influenced by both European and Japanese traditions, who makes organic woodfired works, often on a large scale.

Claude Champy was born in Plaisir where his studio is still based. His education in ceramics began when he studied pottery at L'Ecole des arts appliques et des metiers d'art in Paris. His woodfired works are often inspired by natural forms and landscapes and though most are functional vessel forms, his style is also very sculptural, preferring rugged finishes and asymmetric forms. He describes himself as 'a potter, not a sculptor. I shape the clay around a hollow which is a totally different approach.'

Claude Champy's works are held in many public and private collections throughout the world, and has received numerous awards for his work, including the Grand Prize of the Suntory Museum in Tokyo, Japan.
